COMPARISON BETWEEN SI AND CI ENGINES

The pros and cons of SI and C.I. engines are as follows:

Fuel economy

The main comparison between the two types of engines is how efficiently each engine converts fuel into work energy. The thermal efficiencies of various engines are compared. Thermal efficiency is defined as the ratio of useful work produced to total energy supplied. Thermal efficiencies for gasoline engines can range between 20% and 30%. The corresponding diesel engines have generally improved efficiencies, ranging between 30% and 40%. The compression-ratio and design of both sets of efficiency values have a significant impact on both sets of efficiency values.

Power and Torque

The petrol engine has a shorter stroke and a much wider crankshaft-speed range than the diesel engine. This allows more power to be developed in the petrol engine towards the upper speed range, which is required for high road speeds; however, a long-stroke diesel engine has improved pulling torque over a relatively narrow speed range, which is required for the haulage of heavy commercial vehicles. At the time of writing, there was a trend toward incorporating corporate diesel engines into automobiles. This new generation of engines has different design parameters and, as a result, does not conform to the observations made above.

Reliability

Diesel engines are built stronger, run cooler, and have half the speed range of most petrol engines due to their unique combustion process. These factors make the diesel engine more reliable and significantly extend engine life when compared to the gasoline engine.

Pollution

As the operating load is reduced, diesel engines tend to become noisier and vibrate on their mountings. The combustion process in a petrol engine is quieter and smoother than in a diesel engine. In contrast to the diesel engine, no noisy injection equipment is used in the petrol engine. The combustion products that exit the exhaust system are more noticeable in diesel engines, especially if any of the injection equipment components are out of tune. It’s debatable whether the relatively invisible exhaust gases from petrol engines, which include nitrogen dioxide, are more dangerous than the visible smoky diesel exhaust gases.

Safety

Unlike petrol, diesel fuels are not flammable at normal operating temperature, so they are not a handling hazard and fire risks due to accidents are minimized.

Costing

Diesel engines are more expensive than petrol engines due to their heavy construction and injection equipment.
