Working of Speech Recognition System

• In the training mode, templates of each of the words that the system needs to recognize are produced.
• These templates are stored in the memory.
• To produce a template for the award. The user speaks the word several times in the microphone connected to the system.
• The system then determines several parameters or features of each repetition of words. Then an average of all values is taken and a template is produced.
• The center frequency of filters is adjusted to match those of average speaks.
• The output of the filter is averaged to produce a signal proportional to the energy in each of the frequency bands.
• ZCD is used to give basic frequency information.
• The output of ZCD is converted to volts, so it can be digitized along with the output from averages.
• When the word is spoken, samples of each of the features are taken and digitized at evenly spaced intervals of 10 to 20 ms during the duration of the word. These features are stored in memory.
• In training mode; this set of samples will be averaged with others to form a template of the word.
• In recognization mode, this set of features will be compared with templates stored in memory.
• The best set of matching is considered to be the correct word.

Advantages and disadvantages Of Speech Recognition System

1. The performance is sensitive to the amount of training data available for creating sound class reference patterns. Generally the more training; the higher will be the performance of the system.
2. The reference patterns are sensitive to the speaking environment and transmission characteristics of the medium used to create the speech. This is because spectral characters of speech are affected by environmental conditions.
3. No speech-specific knowledge is used explicitly in the system; hence the method is relatively insensitive to the choice of vocabulary words, tasks, syntax, etc.
4. Computational load is directly proportional to the number of patterns being trained or recognized.
5. Because the system is insensitive to sound class, the basic techniques are applicable to a wide range of speech sounds including phrases, and whole words subwords units.
